Job description

The Site Reliability Engineer role at Apple focuses on developing and maintaining web-based tools and native applications for various teams. This position emphasizes engineering-forward SRE, where the engineer will design systems as well as operate them. The team works with a range of technologies including Kubernetes and AWS, handling sensitive health and research data. The ideal candidate will have strong communication skills and a passion for improving service communication and production behavior.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 5+ years of experience in distributed systems
  • Deep experience with Kubernetes in production, including cluster operations and troubleshooting
  • Strong proficiency designing and operating services in AWS, including EC2, EKS, and RDS
  • Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or Helm
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Python or Go
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and GitOps workflows
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS and load balancing
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex systems
  • Experience building internal automation or self-service tooling
  • 7+ years of experience in distributed systems
  • Experience with event-driven architectures such as Kafka
  • Experience with service mesh or API gateway patterns
  • Familiarity with Django/Python web applications
  • Experience with observability tooling beyond basic monitoring
  • Background working with sensitive data and compliance requirements
  • Experience leading incident response and building on-call culture
  • Contributions to internal or open-source infrastructure tooling

Responsibilities

  • Design systems while also operating them to ensure reliability and performance.
  • Collaborate closely with full-stack engineers to enhance service communication.
  • Observe production behavior and implement improvements.
  • Propose architectural solutions and participate in design discussions.
  • Handle sensitive health and research data while ensuring compliance.
