Job description

The optical sensing team at Apple is seeking a candidate to design, develop, and launch innovative optical-sensing technologies for products like iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple Watch. The role involves developing models and algorithms to understand complex interactions between optical systems. Candidates will collaborate with various engineering teams to integrate these algorithms into the calibration and operation of advanced sensing solutions. Strong numerical simulation skills and a solid understanding of optics are essential for success in this position.

Requirements

  • Experience with optical simulation and characterization of optical sensors
  • Strong mathematical and numerical simulation skills, including programming in MATLAB, Python, or similar languages
  • Minimum requirement of a bachelor's degree
  • Experience developing calibration algorithms for optical systems
  • Knowledge of display technology and/or Electrical Engineering
  • Experience with optical lab equipment such as spectrometers, detectors, and oscilloscopes
  • Excellent documentation skills
  • MS or PhD in Optics, Physics, Math, or Electrical Engineering

Responsibilities

  • Develop numerical algorithms that enable the integration of optical sensors into Apple products
  • Characterize complex optical and electrical interactions
  • Develop models to describe the behavior of optical systems
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Optical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, and Hardware Test Engineering
  • Integrate algorithms into the calibration and operation of state-of-the-art sensing solutions

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
