The Mechanical/HVAC Engineer SME role at Jacobs focuses on providing technical leadership and innovation within the HVAC and mechanical disciplines for data centers. This position requires a seasoned expert to mentor emerging talent and drive strategic initiatives while maintaining high standards in mechanical systems. The role blends deep technical expertise with business development, acting as an ambassador for Jacobs' engineering capabilities. The ideal candidate will work in a hybrid environment, balancing office work with occasional travel to client sites.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field, with a Master's preferred.
- 20+ years of experience in mechanical engineering, including 15+ years in mission-critical or data center environments.
- Proven expertise in chilled water systems, economizers, CRAC/CRAH units, and airflow management.
- Strong familiarity with ASHRAE guidelines, building codes, and environmental regulations.
- Experience with CFD modeling, BMS systems, and energy modeling tools.
- Professional Engineering (PE) license or equivalent certification is a plus.
- Exceptional communication, leadership, and multi-tasking skills.
Responsibilities
- Provide internal technical leadership across HVAC and mechanical disciplines.
- Set design strategy with clients through upfront planning.
- Champion innovation in cooling technologies, energy efficiency, and sustainable design.
- Act as the external face of Jacobs' technical knowledge in client engagements and industry forums.
- Mentor and coach engineers and designers within the HVAC and mechanical discipline.
- Balance strategic initiatives with hands-on project execution, managing multiple priorities.
- Support commissioning, troubleshooting, and lifecycle performance of mechanical systems.
