Job description
The Sr. Research Manager will lead a machine learning research team focused on advancing evaluation methods for AI systems at Apple. This role emphasizes the importance of evaluation as a foundational science, ensuring that methods are production-ready and impactful. The team collaborates closely with applied and measurement scientists to develop human-centered and technically rigorous evaluation methodologies. The manager will set the research agenda and oversee a portfolio of projects, aiming for high-impact applications and publications in top-tier venues.
Requirements
- Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Statistics, or a closely related field
- 5+ years of experience managing or leading research teams in an industry setting
- Experience publishing research at top-tier AI/ML venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, and ICLR
- Technical depth in AI evaluation and the ability to assess and advance measurement methods
- Excellent communication skills for representing research to executive leadership and external communities
- Demonstrated ability to coach researchers toward higher-impact publications
Responsibilities
- Lead a machine learning research team to advance evaluation methods for AI systems
- Set the research agenda and manage the team's portfolio across various projects
- Ensure that novel evaluation methods are designed for productionization into SDKs and APIs
- Collaborate with applied scientists and measurement scientists to build rigorous evaluation systems
- Bring strategic focus to the team's research lifecycle and position work for external impact
