Job description

The CPU Physical Design Engineer role at Apple involves driving RTL-to-GDS design convergence and ensuring block-level physical design delivery. The position requires collaboration with internal teams to optimize design aspects such as timing, power, and reliability. Engineers will also work closely with custom IP teams to enhance memory macros and standard cells. This role is crucial for improving silicon yield and achieving ambitious performance, power, and area goals.

Requirements

  • Minimum BS degree and 10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Experience in logic design and digital circuits
  • Proficiency in Perl or TCL programming languages
  • Knowledge of low power, high frequency physical design techniques
  • Familiarity with industry standard logic synthesis, PnR, STA, and power analysis tools
  • Understanding of deep sub-micron technology and its implications

Responsibilities

  • Drive RTL-to-GDS design convergence through logic synthesis and place-and-route tools
  • Ensure block-level physical design delivery and closure of backend flows
  • Collaborate with internal CAD and PD methodology teams on tool features and optimizations
  • Work with cross-functional teams on CPU floorplan, timing, power, reliability, and testability
  • Define and co-optimize memory macros and library standard cells with custom IP teams

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
