Job description

The Apple Thermal Design team is looking for a thermal engineer to contribute to the next generation of Mac systems. This role involves working collaboratively with various teams to define product objectives and design thermal solutions that enhance customer experience. The engineer will focus on delivering a system thermal design that meets performance targets while optimizing for user satisfaction. The position requires a strong foundation in heat transfer and fluid dynamics, along with numerical analysis skills.

Requirements

  • B.S. and 5+ years of job experience in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, or a related field.
  • Strong understanding of the technical fundamentals of conduction, convection, and radiation.
  • Experience with data processing and analysis.
  • Familiarity with numerical modeling techniques and concepts.
  • M.S. or Ph.D. in heat transfer, fluid dynamics, or a related field.
  • Expertise with commercial CFD tools such as Fluent, Icepak, AEDT, StarCCM+, or FlowTherm.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge of scripting languages like Python, MATLAB, or JMP for data processing and visualization.
  • Experience with TIM selection and the design of heatsinks, heatpipes, vapor chambers, and air movers.
  • Knowledge of design of experiments and measurement techniques for flow and thermal systems.

Responsibilities

  • Act as the primary technical contributor for the thermal design of Mac systems.
  • Collaborate with product teams to deliver thermal designs that meet or exceed performance targets.
  • Optimize thermal solutions while keeping customer experience at the forefront.
  • Conduct numerical analysis of product designs during the conceptualization and prototyping phases.
  • Validate the performance of thermal designs through mass production.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
