Job description

The SDE-II role in the Transactional Services organization focuses on building foundational distributed systems that power AWS services. This position involves working on high-performance, strongly consistent data systems that handle millions of writes per second. The team values collaboration and mentorship, encouraging engineers to raise the technical bar through design reviews and best practices. Candidates should have a strong foundation in computer science and a passion for solving complex problems in distributed systems.

Requirements

  • 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
  • 2+ years of non-internship design or architecture experience of new and existing systems
  • 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
  • 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications
  • 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
  • Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
  • Experience programming with at least one software programming language
  • 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience
  • Knowledge of professional software engineering and best practices for full software development life cycle
  • Experience with Java or Rust in performance-sensitive environments

Responsibilities

  • Design and build highly available, low-latency distributed log and database systems for AWS's critical services.
  • Own end-to-end delivery of software projects from requirements through design, implementation, deployment, and production support.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production distributed systems using systematic debugging and performance profiling.
  • Design and implement efficient data structures and algorithms optimized for throughput, latency, and memory efficiency.
  • Identify and execute opportunities to reduce system latency and optimize cost efficiency across the platform.
  • Drive improvements to security, reliability, durability, and performance across multiple foundational services.
  • Lead and contribute to multi-year, cross-team migration and integration efforts.
  • Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and pairing sessions.
  • Establish and evolve engineering best practices and operational processes for the team.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
