Job description

Rivian is seeking a Staff Software Engineer for its Autonomy organization, specifically within the Data & Cloud team. This role focuses on developing large-scale applications and data pipelines that support data annotation and machine learning training. The engineer will work on both frontend and backend technologies, ensuring the reliability and performance of software that handles petabyte-scale sensor datasets. Collaboration with architects, ML engineers, and data engineers is essential to align on architecture and design.

Requirements

  • B.S., M.S., or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field and at least 6 years of relevant experience, or at least 8 years of industry experience without a degree.
  • Strong full-stack background with TypeScript and modern web stacks, preferably React.
  • Deep backend expertise in Python, Go, or Java on high-throughput or large-data systems.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical design for multi-service or platform-scale systems.
  • Hands-on experience with MongoDB, Postgres, and/or similar databases in production.
  • Proven ability to work cross-functionally across teams and domains, and to communicate clearly to technical and non-technical leaders.
  • History of mentoring engineers and improving team-wide engineering practices.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the technical development of Rivian’s in-house 2D and 3D labeling platform.
  • Set full-stack platform direction for internal tools that accelerate annotation and ML workflows.
  • Lead alignment on backend services and APIs across teams, establishing standards for APIs and data contracts.
  • Guide data modeling and storage strategy across NoSQL databases, considering performance, cost, and consistency tradeoffs.
  • Partner with architects, ML engineers, and data engineers on requirements, architecture, and design.
  • Drive cloud cost, performance, and reliability initiatives, championing SLOs and observability.
  • Mentor junior engineers with technical leadership and knowledge.

Benefits

  • Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
