Job description

The Hardware Functional Safety Engineer will work within the Electric Power Conversion group at Rivian, focusing on the functional safety development of power electronics components. This role requires collaboration with cross-functional teams to ensure safety-critical design decisions are made effectively. The engineer will be responsible for developing safety concepts and requirements while supporting reliability analysis and testing. A strong background in electrical engineering and safety methodologies is essential for success in this position.

Requirements

  • MS, BS, or PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • 5+ years of experience in developing electrical safety hardware and systems safety
  • Experience with ISO 26262 part 4, 5, 8 or IEC 61508 Part 1, 2 & 3
  • Strong understanding of failure mode analysis of complex electrical designs
  • Experience with safety analysis methodologies such as FTA, FMEA, FMEDA, and DFA
  • Ability to create traceability in requirements management tools like JAMA

Responsibilities

  • Develop Hardware FTA, FMEA & FMEDA’s, and DFA for electrical hardware design
  • Serve as the safety expert in safety-critical cross-functional design decisions
  • Support the reliability organization in deriving mission profiles and FIT rates for hardware components
  • Develop hardware safety concepts, architecture, and requirements for various electronics subsystems
  • Collaborate with the reliability organization in defining mission profiles based on vehicle use cases
  • Document all relevant safety requirements, analysis, architecture implementation, verification, and validation events
