The SDE-II role in the Transactional Services organization focuses on building foundational distributed systems that support AWS's largest services. The team specializes in high-performance, strongly consistent data systems that operate at massive scale, processing millions of writes per second. As an SDE-II, you will own systems end-to-end, from design to production support, and work on complex issues in distributed systems. This position requires strong computer science fundamentals and a passion for building durable and consistent systems.
Requirements
- 3+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 2+ years of design or architecture experience of new and existing systems
- 1+ years of software development engineer or related occupational experience
- 1+ years of designing and developing large-scale, multi-tiered, multi-threaded, embedded or distributed software applications
- 1+ years of Object Oriented Design experience
- Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field
- Experience programming with at least one software programming language
- 3+ years of full software development life cycle experience
- Knowledge of professional software engineering best practices
- Experience with Java or Rust in performance-sensitive environments
Responsibilities
- Design and build highly available, low-latency distributed log and database systems for AWS's critical services.
- Own end-to-end delivery of software projects from requirements through design, implementation, deployment, and production support.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues in production distributed systems using systematic debugging and performance profiling.
- Design and implement efficient data structures and algorithms optimized for throughput, latency, and memory efficiency.
- Identify and execute opportunities to reduce system latency and optimize cost efficiency across the platform.
- Drive improvements to security, reliability, durability, and performance across multiple foundational services.
- Lead and contribute to multi-year, cross-team migration and integration efforts.
- Mentor junior engineers through code reviews, design discussions, and pairing sessions.
- Establish and evolve engineering best practices and operational processes for the team.
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
