Job description

Apple is seeking a Photonics Test Development Hardware Engineer to join their innovative team. This role focuses on developing scalable optical and optoelectronic test and calibration procedures for integrated photonics devices in sensing applications. The engineer will work closely with cross-functional teams and external partners to transition cutting-edge photonics technology into high-volume consumer products. Candidates should have strong optics lab skills and coding experience, along with a passion for scaling technology from prototype to production.

Requirements

  • BS or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a similar field
  • 10+ years of relevant mass production experience developing test processes for photonics or optical systems
  • Experience with laser, free-space, fiber, or integrated optics, and various optical measurement techniques
  • Experience with object-oriented programming and data analysis in Python or similar languages
  • Understanding of manufacturing constraints including cost modeling, throughput optimization, and yield considerations
  • Familiarity with basic electronic circuits, control theory, and feedback loops

Responsibilities

  • Develop test methodologies and spend significant time in the lab writing code and defining test plans/specifications
  • Design specialized test equipment and optimize calibration processes to achieve high throughput and yield
  • Run tests and calibrations while collaborating cross-functionally within Apple and with external partners
  • Establish the foundation for transitioning photonics technology into high-volume consumer products
  • Automate hardware test stations in a lab or manufacturing setting for characterization of active integrated photonic devices
  • Build and maintain Python modules, including git-based version control, documentation, and continuous integration testing

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
