Job description

The Hardware Functional Safety Engineer at Rivian will work within the Electric Power Conversion group, focusing on the functional safety development of power electronics components and drive-unit systems. This role emphasizes collaboration across various teams to ensure safety in design and implementation. The engineer will be responsible for developing safety analyses and requirements while supporting the overall safety culture within the organization. The position is based in Torrance, CA, and reports to the Sr. Manager of Functional Safety.

Requirements

  • MS, BS, or PhD in Electrical/Electronic Engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in developing electrical safety hardware and systems
  • Experience with ISO 26262 parts 4, 5, and 8 or IEC 61508 Part 1, 2 & 3
  • Strong understanding of failure mode analysis of complex electrical designs and ASICs
  • Experience with Safety Analysis methodologies such as FTA, FMEDA, and DFA
  • Ability to create traceability in JAMA or similar requirements management tools
  • Experience working within cross-functional teams

Responsibilities

  • Develop Hardware FTA, FMEA & FMEDA’s, and DFA for electrical hardware design
  • Serve as the safety expert in safety-critical cross-functional design decisions
  • Support the reliability organization in deriving mission profiles and FIT rates for hardware components
  • Develop hardware safety concepts, architecture, and requirements for various electronics subsystems
  • Collaborate with the reliability organization in defining mission profiles based on vehicle use cases
  • Develop upstream and downstream traceability between hardware safety and technical safety requirements
  • Develop a Design Verification Plan for relevant hardware safety and system safety requirements
  • Support test teams in executing test cases and troubleshooting
  • Document all relevant safety requirements, analysis, and verification events for each sub-system
  • Drive functional safety design processes across the organization
