Job description

The MTS Hardware Development Engineer at AMD will focus on researching, designing, developing, and testing computer-related equipment, particularly thermal components. This role involves collaborating with the engineering team to optimize thermal performance and troubleshoot airflow issues in server systems. The engineer will also provide technical support to manufacturing and customers while managing engineering change orders. The position emphasizes hands-on experience and the application of advanced engineering analysis using 3D CAD software.

Requirements

  • Master's degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • Three years of experience in the job offered or closely related engineering role.
  • Alternatively, a Bachelor's degree or foreign equivalent in a related field and five years of experience in the job offered or closely related engineering role.
  • Experience in hardware and software verification.
  • Proficiency in CAD tools.
  • Familiarity with product development lifecycles for semiconductor products.
  • Experience in Unix or Linux environments.
  • Proficiency in C, C++, or Python.
  • Experience with server systems.
  • Experience conducting acoustic testing on server products.
  • Ability to create thermal test plans to validate hardware.
  • Knowledge of design flows and methodologies for server validation.
  • Experience developing fan speed control for servers.

Responsibilities

  • Research, design, develop, or test computer or computer-related equipment.
  • Develop thermal components using 3D CAD software and advanced engineering analysis.
  • Provide regular Q&A and on-site support to the manufacturing engineering group.
  • Support the engineering team by loading, testing, and validating thermal solutions for rackmount servers.
  • Troubleshoot thermal and/or airflow issues in new and existing product lines.
  • Work with the engineering team to optimize the thermal performance of servers using empirical data.
  • Optimize airflow speed, volume, and flow paths to meet customer and component requirements.
  • Interface with the Firmware team to implement fan speed control algorithms.
  • Support custom engineering projects that require hands-on ability to interconnect complex server systems.
  • Produce thermal reports from experimental data and testing/modeling experience.
  • Manage the Engineering Change Order (ECO) process and provide validation for design modifications.
  • Analyze and solve technical problems/issues in a fast-paced environment.
  • Produce engineering documents including design drawings and installation manuals.
  • Support the procurement team in identifying and managing heat sink and air mover vendors.
  • Assist in the development of key thermal components and systems from concept to engineering release.
  • Run server system thermal tests using data acquisition equipment and thermal stress test software.
  • Troubleshoot thermal and/or airflow issues using empirical data and commercial CFD software.
