Job description

The Principal Software Engineer role in the Consumer Copilot Security team at Microsoft focuses on defining and leading the strategy for authentication, authorization, and account systems across Copilot experiences. This position requires a blend of backend engineering expertise and knowledge of modern consumer identity protocols. The engineer will work to secure AI experiences for millions of users while balancing speed and trust. The role involves collaboration with various teams to drive improvements in security and identity management.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 12+ years of technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Experience integrating with Microsoft Account and familiarity with consumer identity features.
  • Experience embedding privacy-by-design and meeting consumer compliance expectations for Copilot-class workloads.
  • Track record mentoring senior engineers and driving adoption of platform standards across many product teams.

Responsibilities

  • Define the end-to-end identity vision for consumer Copilot and MAI, covering user/account models, sign-in, session management, token issuance/validation, service-to-service auth, and cross-device experiences.
  • Drive common authentication/SSO patterns and SDKs for Windows, Edge, web, iOS, and Android.
  • Collaborate with product, engineering, security, privacy, and identity teams across Copilot, MAI, and IDNA to drive improvements in authentication, identity, and security.
  • Establish, monitor, and continuously improve key authentication metrics across Copilot and MAI.
  • Align with central Microsoft Account roadmaps, influence platform capabilities, and land them in Copilot and MAI consumer scenarios at scale.
  • Define and document authentication patterns and requirements for AI-powered, agentic flows.
  • Ship secure, well-tested, maintainable code and frameworks that other teams can adopt quickly.
  • Balance customer experience with consumer-grade security, privacy, and compliance expectations for Copilot.
  • Manage effective communication, coordination, and project delivery across multiple time zones.
