Job description

The Health Sensing Hardware team is seeking a motivated optical engineer to contribute to the development of next-generation optical health sensors for products like the Apple Watch and AirPods. The role involves leveraging expertise in optical system design, modeling, and fabrication while analyzing user data to enhance sensor performance. Collaboration with research scientists and hardware engineers is essential to improve the understanding of skin-sensor interactions. The engineer will also communicate design assessments to leadership and cross-functional partners.

Requirements

  • BS in Biomedical Engineering, Optical Engineering, or a related field.
  • PhD in Biomedical or Optical Engineering.
  • 2+ years of industry experience in a related field.
  • Strong optical simulation skills using commercial ray-tracing packages.
  • Knowledge of optical system design for wearable sensing applications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the optical design of health sensors through simulations and prototype assessments.
  • Analyze user data to infer trends and improve sensor performance.
  • Collaborate closely with mechanical, electrical, and software engineers.
  • Deliver detailed assessments and design evaluations to leadership and cross-functional partners.
  • Conduct user studies to enhance understanding of skin-sensor interactions.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
