Job description

The role involves working as an AI observability engineer at Apple, focusing on designing and building AI observability solutions that enhance Apple's intelligent products. The team is dedicated to creating AI-first observability services that integrate AI and cloud-first engineering. Candidates should have a strong background in software engineering and a passion for observability and AI technologies. This position offers the opportunity to impact the experience of billions of users through innovative observability features.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of software engineering experience building and operating large-scale, cloud-native, distributed systems and microservices in public cloud infrastructure and/or private cloud environments.
  • 7+ years of software engineering experience with a strong background in computer science, including distributed systems, algorithms, data structures, APIs, and highly-scalable, reliable systems.
  • Demonstrated experience using LLM and ML models for AIOps and model observability.
  • Hands-on experience building ML pipelines, portable workflows, and model tuning for deploying ML and LLM models in production.
  • Hands-on experience using LLMs and ML frameworks such as TensorFlow, PyTorch, and libraries like Scikit-learn, NumPy, LangChain, MLFlow, and KubeFlow.
  • Experience building services for observability analysis, including anomaly detection, incident detection, automated remediation, and root-cause analysis.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, problem-solving, and cross-team collaboration skills.
  • Knowledge of current Gen AI research and techniques, including MCPs, RAG systems, and Agentic AI.
  • Hands-on experience with agentic AI frameworks for building multi-step reasoning and tool-using agents.
  • Experience designing multi-agent orchestration, tool-calling, or RAG systems for operational workflows.
  • Demonstrated proficiency operating workloads on public and/or private cloud platforms, Kubernetes, object storage, networking, databases, and observability services.
  • Demonstrated experience in building observability systems for metrics, distributed tracing, logs, and profiling.
  • Experience with large-scale observability visualization tools like Grafana, DataDog, and ELK.
  • Experience building large-scale incident management, alert management, and notification systems.
  • Active contributions to CNCF or open source projects.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop user-facing observability features for AIML products and infrastructure.
  • Provide technical guidance and share observability best practices with the team.
  • Leverage AI pipelines to mentor the team in developing best-of-class features.
  • Collaborate with a team of engineers to innovate and build new observability solutions.
  • Utilize industry-standard open-source technologies in the development process.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
