Job description

The Physical Design Engineer role at Amazon Web Services focuses on the design and optimization of hardware for data centers. As part of the Silicon Optimization Engineering Team, you will lead the application of new technologies to enhance large-scale deployments. This position requires a commitment to high standards and continuous improvement in product performance, quality, and cost. You will collaborate with various technology leaders and work in a fast-paced, intellectually stimulating environment.

Requirements

  • BS + 12 years or MS + 8 years in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science
  • 6+ years of experience in ASIC Physical Design from RTL-to-GDSII in 7nm, 14/16nm, 20nm, or 28nm
  • Expertise using CAD tools such as Cadence, Mentor Graphics, or Synopsys
  • Scripting experience with Tcl, Perl, or Python
  • 4+ years of experience in integrating IP and specifying IP requirements in the physical domain
  • Thorough knowledge of device physics and custom/semi-custom implementation techniques

Responsibilities

  • Work with RTL/logic designers to drive architectural feasibility studies and explore power-performance-area tradeoffs for physical design closure.
  • Drive block physical implementation through various processes including synthesis, formal verification, and timing closure.
  • Develop physical design methodologies and evaluate third-party IP.
  • Collaborate effectively with other physical design engineers and RTL/Architecture teams.
  • Provide mentorship and guidance to junior engineers.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
