Job description

The Sr. Staff Electronic Design Engineering Lead at Rivian will lead a team of engineers focused on low voltage electrical system design for current and future products. This role requires a blend of strategic oversight and hands-on engineering to define hardware requirements and drive technical decisions. The ideal candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure successful product integration and robust performance. This position offers high visibility and ownership within the engineering team, emphasizing innovation and problem-solving in a fast-paced environment.

Requirements

  • BS + 10 years or MS + 8 years or PhD + 6 years or equivalent experience in electrical engineering or a related field.
  • Demonstrated hardware design experience in analog, digital, mixed-signal, power electronics, communication interfaces, and systems integration.
  • Proven ability to take products from concept through launch, including design, validation, manufacturing support, and issue resolution.
  • Experience with schematic capture, PCB layout, SMT, board bring-up, debug, root cause analysis, and hardware validation.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills and the ability to drive decisions across hardware, software, systems, manufacturing, and supplier teams.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to clearly present technical trade-offs, risks, and information.
  • Demonstrated strong creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to dive deep into electrical first principles and work in fast-paced and challenging environments.
  • Understanding of automotive requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the electrical design and development of low voltage electronics and charging-related hardware products from concept through production.
  • Own key technical decisions across architecture, circuit design, component selection, schematic capture, board bring-up, debug, validation, and issue resolution.
  • Partner with cross-functional teams to translate product requirements into hardware requirements, interfaces, and design targets.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, firmware, systems, and test teams to ensure successful product integration and robust end-to-end behavior.
  • Work with suppliers and manufacturing partners on feasibility, design reviews, DFM/DFT, validation plans, change management, and launch readiness.
  • Simplify complex functions and features to their core components using a first principles approach to drive simple and structured requirements.
  • Participate in safety and reliability reviews and contribute to resolving reliability issues for components, subsystems, and assemblies.
  • Collaborate with reliability engineers to support DFMEA to drive reliable design choices and improve validation test planning.
  • Drive technical decisions and guide the team in the right direction.
  • Drive technical risk identification and mitigation throughout the development cycle.
  • Think holistically and understand the impact of plans or decisions on programs and customers.
  • Mentor other engineers and help raise the technical bar across the team.

Benefits

  • Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
