Job description

The Member of Technical Staff - Mechanical Engineer role focuses on building complex robotic systems, requiring a deep understanding of structural and electromechanical design. The position is part of the Frontier AI & Robotics team at Amazon, which is dedicated to developing advanced AI models for robotics. Candidates will engage in hands-on mechanical design and system architecture for high degree-of-freedom robotics platforms. This role also offers opportunities for innovative research in mechatronics and sensor integration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • 6 to 10 years of experience in designing mechanical systems for robotics or complex electromechanical products.
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software such as SolidWorks or OnShape.
  • Hands-on experience building prototypes and troubleshooting mechanical issues.
  • Understanding of actuator and motor selection for complex robotic applications.
  • Experience with wire/cable harness design and routing in compact mechanical systems.
  • Familiarity with integrating sensing and compute elements into mechanical designs.
  • Knowledge of Design for Manufacturing (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) principles.

Responsibilities

  • Lead mechanical design of robotic subsystems and full platforms.
  • Own kinematic, dynamic, and structural analyses for high-DoF robots.
  • Specify and integrate actuators and motors for high-torque density applications.
  • Contribute to thermal management strategies for motors and sensors.
  • Integrate various sensors into compact, functional assemblies.
  • Design and route cabling and wire harnesses for reliability and serviceability.
  • Prototype and test mechanical systems, supporting hands-on builds and debugging.
  • Conduct root cause analysis on system-level failures and implement design improvements.
  • Apply DFM and DFA principles to transition prototypes into scalable builds.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to meet research and product goals.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
