·FY 2025Job description
As a Member of Technical Staff - Firmware Engineer at Amazon's Frontier AI & Robotics team, you will develop low-level firmware for in-house robotic actuators. This role focuses on bridging sophisticated hardware with high-level AI control systems to enable robots to operate effectively in warehouse environments. You will collaborate with engineers across disciplines to ensure robust and safe operation of robotic systems. Your contributions will be vital to advancing one of the most ambitious robotics programs globally.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Embedded Systems, or a related technical field
- 5+ years of professional embedded firmware development experience, with expertise in real-time control systems for electromechanical or power electronics hardware
- Proficiency in C and/or C++ for embedded/real-time systems, with experience writing firmware for microcontrollers or DSPs
- Hands-on experience developing motor control firmware, including field-oriented control (FOC) and closed-loop control
- Experience with hardware communication protocols relevant to actuator systems such as CAN, SPI, and I2C
- Demonstrated ability to debug firmware and hardware issues using tools like oscilloscopes and logic analyzers
- Experience developing actuator firmware for robotic systems or high-performance motion control platforms
- Familiarity with proprioceptive sensing and torque estimation techniques in robots
- Knowledge of functional safety standards as applied to motor drive firmware
Responsibilities
- Develop, test, and optimize embedded firmware for custom robotic actuators
- Design and implement real-time firmware for actuator state estimation and fault detection
- Collaborate with electronics and motor design engineers to define firmware requirements and hardware interfaces
- Build and maintain firmware test frameworks and hardware-in-the-loop test environments
- Partner with controls engineers and AI researchers to ensure firmware-level interfaces support high-bandwidth communication
- Contribute to actuator firmware architecture decisions and maintain firmware documentation
- Support rapid hardware bring-up and debugging of new actuator prototypes
Benefits
- Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
