Job description
The Site Reliability Engineer role at Apple focuses on developing web-based tools and native applications to support Apple teams. The position emphasizes engineering-forward SRE, where the engineer will design systems as much as they operate them. The team works with a variety of technologies, including Kubernetes and AWS, to manage sensitive health and research data. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in distributed systems and excellent communication skills to collaborate effectively with engineers.
Requirements
- BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 3+ years of experience in distributed systems
- Deep experience with Kubernetes in production, including cluster operations and troubleshooting
- Strong proficiency designing and operating services in AWS, including EC2, EKS, and RDS
- Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform or Helm
- Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Python or Go
- Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and GitOps workflows
- Strong understanding of networking fundamentals, including DNS and load balancing
- Excellent communication skills to explain complex systems
- Experience building internal automation or self-service tooling
- Experience with event-driven architectures such as Kafka or RabbitMQ
- Experience with service mesh or API gateway patterns
- Familiarity with Django/Python web applications
- Experience with observability tooling beyond basic monitoring
- Background working with sensitive data and compliance requirements
- Experience leading incident response and building on-call culture
- Contributions to internal or open-source infrastructure tooling
Responsibilities
- Design and operate systems that support Apple teams and their applications
- Collaborate closely with full-stack engineers to improve service communication
- Enhance production behavior observation and ensure safe deployment of changes
- Propose architectural solutions and participate in design discussions
- Manage and troubleshoot Kubernetes clusters and AWS services
- Build and maintain internal automation tools to reduce manual operational work
- Lead incident response efforts and foster a strong on-call culture
