Job description

The Principal Engineer for YouTube Shorts will lead the technical strategy for enhancing viewer engagement through improved recommendation systems. This role is part of the Viewer Growth team, which focuses on understanding user interests and behaviors using advanced AI and machine learning technologies. The engineer will collaborate with various cross-functional teams to integrate next-generation infrastructure and generative AI capabilities. The position aims to drive significant growth in viewership by building high-quality feeds based on user preferences.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 15 years of experience in engineering.
  • Experience with cross-functional technical innovation.
  • 7 years of experience in a technical leadership role responsible for multiple technical areas and setting technical direction.
  • Deep expertise in large-scale recommendation systems, generative AI for content understanding, and machine learning infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Engineering Director to set and execute the technical outlook for product growth.
  • Address high-dimensional machine learning challenges, including modeling sparse and complex survey responses.
  • Build algorithms and infrastructure for integrating user interests into a real-time responsive recommendation stack.
  • Collaborate with technical leads on cross-functional teams to improve user and content understanding.
