Job description
The Materials Science Engineering Technical Specialist will join the Engineering team at Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems in Troy, MI. This role focuses on applying advanced statistical methods and conducting thorough failure analyses to improve product and process outcomes. The specialist will also optimize material and process selection, enhance material robustness, and improve technical knowledge transfer across teams. Strong collaboration with suppliers and effective communication are essential for success in this position.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or an appropriate STEM field is required.
- A solid understanding of casting processes, material behavior, and material-processing interactions is necessary.
- Proficiency with sectioning, sample preparation, and material characterization equipment is required.
- Strong report-writing skills to document investigations and communicate findings are essential.
- Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required.
Responsibilities
- Apply advanced statistical methods to deliver evidence-driven recommendations.
- Conduct thorough component failure analyses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions.
- Evaluate component requirements and select appropriate materials and manufacturing routes.
- Perform mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical property characterization.
- Produce clear technical documentation to support decision-making and knowledge sharing.
- Build strong internal and external networks to enhance collaboration and problem-solving.
- Apply structured problem-solving methodologies to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
