Job description

Amazon is looking for a Senior Hardware Engineer to lead the evaluation, customization, and deployment of automated mechanical systems for advanced robotics programs. This role involves serving as the technical lead for mechanical hardware strategy and system integration. The engineer will work closely with internal teams and external vendors to create production-ready mechanical solutions for complex automation challenges. The position requires a deep understanding of automated assembly systems and the ability to connect various aspects of mechanical design and system performance.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in robotics, mechanical/mechatronics engineering, systems engineering or related field
  • 7+ years of experience in mechanical hardware design, development, and validation for automated or robotic systems
  • Strong CAD proficiency (SolidWorks or NX) with experience producing detailed drawings, assemblies, and technical documentation
  • Proven ability to independently design and deliver mechanical hardware from concept through production with limited guidance
  • Experience evaluating vendor designs and making informed make-versus-buy trade-off decisions
  • Demonstrated ability to perform root cause analysis on mechanical failures and drive corrective actions
  • Experience working with external vendors and system integrators to deliver customized technical solutions

Responsibilities

  • Own end-to-end evaluation and selection of commercially available automation solutions, critically assessing designs against internal use cases.
  • Work directly with vendors to customize mechanical and automation solutions to address varied and demanding requirements.
  • Deep dive mechanical failures during pilots and early deployments to identify root causes and drive corrective actions.
  • Independently design, develop, and validate mechanical hardware for automated systems including workstations and robotic arms.
  • Develop and deliver detailed CAD models, engineering drawings, trade studies, and technical documentation using SolidWorks or NX.
  • Define fixturing, tooling, and workholding strategies to ensure repeatability and efficient integration across automation platforms.
  • Build and manage relationships with automation OEMs, system integrators, and component suppliers.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with systems engineers, product managers, and manufacturing teams to ensure cohesive planning.
  • Establish and maintain comprehensive documentation including design reviews and failure analyses.
  • Contribute to the growth of the engineering team by mentoring peers and participating in design reviews.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
