Job description
The Materials Engineer role within Apple's Product Design organization focuses on developing new coating materials and processes to enhance surface durability and aesthetics across various product designs. The team is dedicated to optimizing polymer materials and influencing innovative designs for Apple products. The position requires strong collaboration with suppliers and internal design teams to meet material needs and environmental goals. Candidates must manage multiple projects with a high level of autonomy and attention to detail.
Requirements
- MS in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering with 3+ years in the coating industry
- Strong materials fundamentals in polymer material properties
- Experience in polymer coating chemistries and application processes
- Knowledge of paint materials and design for manufacturing
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to travel within China and internationally within Asia 25%-35%
- PhD in Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or Polymer Engineering or 10+ years in the coating industry
- Effective written, presentation, and verbal communication skills
- Familiarity with failure characterization techniques
Responsibilities
- Drive the development of new coating materials and processes
- Identify, develop, and implement new coating materials for Apple hardware products
- Foster collaborative relationships with Apple suppliers to influence product development
- Collaborate with product design and industrial design groups on material selection and design feasibility
- Help deliver Apple’s materials environmental goals and reduce the carbon footprint of plastics
- Manage multiple projects in parallel with high attention to detail
