Job description

The Lead Forward Deployed Engineer (FDE) at Apple Services Engineering will play a crucial role in building the next generation of AI evaluation systems. This position involves acting as a bridge between science, platform engineering, and product management to ensure the development and adoption of effective solutions. The FDE will engage with machine learning practitioners to operationalize measurement techniques and represent developer insights to refine the product roadmap. This role is ideal for someone who thrives in ambiguity and is passionate about democratizing AI evaluation.

Requirements

  • 5+ years of experience in Solutions Architecture, Forward-Deployed Engineering, Developer Advocacy, Technical Program Management, or a related highly technical, cross-functional role.
  • Experience acting as a technical partner to internal customers and translating vague requirements into concrete engineering specifications.
  • Functional literacy in AI/ML concepts, including understanding the fundamental lifecycle of machine learning.
  • Demonstrated experience partnering with Applied Scientists or Researchers and navigating research workflows.
  • Exceptional communication skills to represent the platform to executive leadership and partner teams.
  • Ability to navigate extreme ambiguity and define roadmaps where none existed.
  • Deep familiarity with AI Evaluation Frameworks and modern evaluation tools.
  • Experience designing research or tools with self-service adoption as a priority.
  • Previous experience operating in a 'Chief of Staff' or strategic proxy capacity for a technical organization.
  • A background in bridging research-heavy environments with production engineering teams.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the solutions and adoption strategy for AI evaluation systems.
  • Act as the connective tissue between science, platform engineering, and partner teams.
  • Transform complex workflows into intuitive, developer-first platforms.
  • Engage with ML practitioners to operationalize sophisticated measurement techniques.
  • Represent the voice of the developer to help refine the product roadmap.
  • Ensure tools integrate seamlessly with existing ML infrastructure and developer workflows.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
