Job description

The role is for an experienced engineering manager to lead the ML engineering team focused on developing international intelligence features for Apple's products. The manager will oversee a talented group of engineers, ensuring the delivery of innovative solutions while fostering a culture of collaboration and technical excellence. This position requires a blend of technical expertise and leadership skills to guide the team in utilizing large language models and enhancing the international customer experience. The manager will also be responsible for defining strategic roadmaps and engaging in hands-on technical work as needed.

Requirements

  • BS, MS or PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Machine Learning or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience managing, mentoring, and growing software engineering or applied machine learning teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to act as a hands-on technical manager with strong programming skills in Python, Swift, C or C++.
  • Experience leading large cross-functional software engineering projects that have significant international impact.
  • Deep technical experience with Machine Learning, particularly with Large Language Models.
  • High emotional intelligence with strong people management skills.
  • Experience influencing cross-functional and cross-culturally partners at multiple levels of an organization.
  • Ability to lead in a fast-paced environment with frequent context switching and changing priorities.
  • Prior experience managing a blended team of Software Engineers and Machine Learning Engineers/Researchers.
  • Deep experience in software localization and internationalization at scale.
  • Experience adapting pre-trained LLMs for downstream tasks and deploying them to production.
  • Familiarity with localization standards and technologies.
  • Native-level foreign language skills in reading, writing and speaking.
  • Knowledge of Computational Linguistics.
  • Experience using Xcode to build software for Apple's platforms.
  • Proficiency with Apple's development APIs.

Responsibilities

  • Recruit, manage, and mentor a high-performing team of International Engineering Leads and Applied ML Engineers.
  • Act as a hands-on technical leader, capable of architecting solutions, writing code, and training models.
  • Define the strategic roadmap and drive the internationalization of Apple's intelligence features.
  • Conduct regular 1-on-1s, guiding career development and providing actionable feedback to engineers.
  • Guide ML Engineers in the exploration and application of Large Language Models for localization tasks.
  • Regularly assess feature internationalization readiness and review statistical evaluation results.
  • Author weekly executive status reports and represent the international engineering team in senior leadership meetings.
  • Advocate for the international customer and ML best practices in cross-functional meetings.
  • Facilitate communication between the team, project managers, and feature teams to drive efficiencies.
  • Engage deeply in all aspects of intelligence feature engineering alongside the team.
