Job description

Tesla is seeking a Manufacturing Equipment Engineer to design and develop battery cell manufacturing equipment. The role involves working in a fast-paced environment, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and managing equipment suppliers to ensure successful deployment to production.

Requirements

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, or equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of related experience developing and launching new manufacturing equipment
  • Experience with large manufacturing lines implementation
  • Experience with industrial engineering concepts—such as line balancing and timing charts
  • Good mechanical aptitude and understanding of tolerance stack up
  • Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally
  • Understanding of manufacturing equipment safety systems
  • Strong familiarity with structured problem-solving methodologies such as DMAIC, 5 Whys, Fishbone, and 8D
  • Experience with developing layouts in AutoCAD and designing mechanical equipment, fixturing, and tooling in CAD
  • Experience with vision systems, PLC controls, and MES & database system architecture
  • Experience with following manufacturing equipment is a plus: Electrolyte fill, laser welding, prismatic cell formation, automated storage and retrieval systems

Responsibilities

  • Take equipment from a rough concept to full production
  • Manage equipment suppliers or internal design teams through development and deployment milestones
  • Develop line layouts, station requirements, and equipment timing charts
  • Develop material flow strategy within factory and identify utilities needed
  • Complete process failure mode and analysis (PFMEA)
  • Visit and evaluate equipment vendors
  • Oversee equipment installation and coordinate with building and utilities team
  • Provide all necessary documentation and train relevant team members on equipment usage
