Job description
The Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) at Apple is responsible for driving the development of mechanical manufacturing processes across the global supply base. This hands-on role involves collaboration with various teams, including Industrial Design and Product Design, to provide end-to-end manufacturing solutions. MDEs focus on process development, equipment selection, and automation while ensuring quality and yield requirements are met. The position requires strong technical expertise and the ability to lead projects effectively.
Requirements
- 3+ years of full-time mechanical manufacturing experience is required.
- A BS, MS, or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering is required.
- Demonstrated hands-on mechanical ability is necessary.
- Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills are essential.
- Experience with highly cosmetic parts and in a manufacturing environment of consumer electronics or consumer plastic/sheet metal products is a plus.
- 35% domestic and international travel is required.
Responsibilities
- Define best-in-class processes to meet all Apple design and operational requirements.
- Develop and document processes including all parameters, consumables, and secondary operation requirements to meet defined specifications.
- Work with Global Supply Managers to define and establish supply chain requirements using selected equipment and manufacturing suppliers.
- Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and product production ramp, and drive engineering issues to resolution.
- Use data to drive process decisions, including basic data analysis, DOEs, and SPC.
- Identify, research, develop, and qualify premier equipment manufacturers and suppliers.
- Define part tolerance and specifications by demonstrating process capability to Product Designers and Industrial Designers.
