Job description

The Lead Engineer for the Data for Autonomous Aircraft (DA2) team at Amazon Prime Air will serve as the senior technical authority, focusing on hardware-software integration for complex sensor payloads. This role requires a versatile engineer with at least 10 years of experience in aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems. The team is dedicated to designing and operating prototype platforms that provide high-quality data for commercial autonomous flight operations. The Lead Engineer will set the technical roadmap and ensure the quality of deliverables across various engineering domains.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of engineering experience, preferably in aerospace, robotics, or autonomous systems.
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
  • Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure.
  • Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, or Rust.
  • Experience with Linux/Unix.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines and build processes.
  • Experience with distributed systems at scale.
  • Experience in professional software development (non-internship).
  • Experience writing technical documents, project plans, and progress reports.
  • Experience designing or architecting new and existing systems.
  • Experience building tools for building, testing, releasing, or monitoring.
  • Experience in mentoring, leading, or managing more junior engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain the DA2 engineering roadmap, balancing defect resolution and operational reliability with long-term platform development.
  • Own the technical quality of all team deliverables across hardware, software, and systems integration.
  • Serve as the escalation point for the most complex cross-domain challenges spanning embedded software, sensor hardware, data pipelines, and system integration.
  • Drive integration strategy ensuring software operates reliably on deployed payload hardware.
  • Lead resolution of interface issues across camera systems, navigation units, radar, and onboard processing.
  • Champion AI tools and techniques in engineering workflows to improve velocity and effectiveness.
  • Represent DA2 engineering in technical forums, design reviews, trade studies, and leadership discussions.
  • Collaborate with partner teams to align priorities with program objectives.
  • Mentor engineers across disciplines and foster a culture of rigorous engineering practice.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
