Job description

The Site Reliability Engineer role at Apple focuses on developing and maintaining web-based tools and native applications for internal teams. The position emphasizes engineering-forward SRE practices, where the engineer will design systems as well as operate them. The team works with a variety of technologies, including Kubernetes and AWS, to handle sensitive health and research data. The ideal candidate will be a strong communicator and a systems thinker, contributing to architectural decisions and improvements in service communication.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience, with 5+ years of experience in distributed systems.
  • Deep experience with Kubernetes in production, including cluster operations, networking, and troubleshooting.
  • Strong proficiency designing and operating services in AWS, including EC2, EKS, RDS, S3, IAM, and VPC.
  • Hands-on infrastructure-as-code experience with Terraform, Helm, or equivalent.
  • Proficiency in at least one backend language such as Python or Go.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipeline design and GitOps workflows.
  • Strong understanding of networking fundamentals including DNS, load balancing, and service discovery.
  • Excellent communication skills to explain complex systems to engineers.
  • Experience building internal automation or self-service tooling.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures such as Kafka or RabbitMQ.
  • Experience with service mesh or API gateway patterns like Istio or Envoy.
  • Familiarity with Django/Python web applications and their operational characteristics.
  • Experience with observability tooling beyond basic monitoring.
  • Background working with sensitive data and associated compliance requirements.
  • Experience leading incident response and building on-call culture.

Responsibilities

  • Design and operate systems that support the development of web-based tools and native applications.
  • Collaborate closely with full-stack engineers to improve service communication and production behavior.
  • Propose architectural solutions and improvements for the platform.
  • Handle sensitive health and research data while ensuring compliance with relevant regulations.
  • Contribute to the development of internal automation and self-service tools.
  • Lead incident response efforts and foster a strong on-call culture within the team.

Benefits

  • Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
