Job description

The Member of Technical Staff position at Microsoft Robotics focuses on developing perception, localization, mapping, and navigation capabilities for robots. This senior-level role involves designing and integrating production-quality autonomy systems that enable robots to navigate complex environments. The team is dedicated to building an integrated robotics software and AI platform that enhances collaboration between humans and robots. Candidates will work on turning advanced research capabilities into reliable systems that meet real-world operational constraints.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Deep experience developing robotics perception or navigation systems, including SLAM, visual-inertial odometry, LiDAR odometry, sensor fusion, state estimation, mapping, obstacle detection, semantic mapping, or traversability estimation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design, development, and integration of perception and navigation systems for robotic platforms.
  • Develop robust state estimation and localization pipelines using data from various robot sensor modalities.
  • Build spatial representations for navigation and planning, including occupancy maps and semantic maps.
  • Integrate perception outputs with planning, control, simulation, and fleet operations systems.
  • Architect perception-navigation pipelines that meet practical constraints for latency and reliability.
  • Develop evaluation frameworks and benchmarks to measure performance across deployments.
  • Partner with engineers to connect classical robotics pipelines with modern AI models.
  • Analyze field logs and sensor data to improve system robustness.
  • Lead technical design reviews and mentor other engineers on robotics autonomy development.
  • Stay current with state-of-the-art research and industry practices in robotics perception and navigation.

Benefits

  • Employees at Microsoft are often offered comprehensive, “world-class” benefits—including health and mental-wellness programs, competitive pay with bonuses and stock awards, and retirement/savings options. Time-off and flexibility are common, with generous vacation and holidays, parental and caregiver leave, and flexible work schedules, alongside learning support, employee resource groups, product discounts, and matching-gifts/volunteering programs. Specific benefits can vary by region.
