The Senior Product Safety Design Engineer role at Google focuses on enhancing product safety within the Platforms Engineering team. This position involves collaborating with hardware design teams to ensure compliance with safety standards and regulations. The engineer will engage with various disciplines early in the R&D cycle to implement safety features by design. The role requires physical interaction with hardware in a simulated data center environment, emphasizing the importance of safety in Google's computing infrastructure.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience working in product safety, or 3 years of experience with an advanced degree.
  • Master's or PhD degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field is preferred.
  • 1 year of experience in technical leadership is preferred.
  • Experience with procedures related to obtaining international product safety approvals is preferred.
  • Experience with test equipment such as oscilloscopes and hi-pot testers is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with hardware design teams and suppliers to understand new project architectures and determine appropriate safety standards.
  • Apply hazard-based safety engineering principles to evaluate hazards and provide feedback to the design team.
  • Develop and execute test plans while leading a compliance testing team to validate safety goals against relevant standards.
  • Cultivate good working relationships with customers, external suppliers, and agencies to further safety goals.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as needed to communicate findings and perform failure analysis.
