Job description

The Senior Software Engineer role within the Copilot CLI team at GitHub and Microsoft focuses on building a world-class coding agent in the terminal. This position is ideal for engineers who prioritize product quality and end-to-end ownership. The team works at the intersection of agentic AI systems and high-performance developer tooling, aiming to create reliable tools that developers can trust. Candidates should be passionate about enhancing terminal experiences and optimizing agentic systems.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 4+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including, but not limited to, C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating generative AI or agentic systems in production.
  • 5+ years of experience building and shipping customer-facing developer products.

Responsibilities

  • Take ownership of critical product and platform areas of the Copilot CLI and shared agent runtime.
  • Set a high technical and quality bar for agentic systems and developer-facing tooling.
  • Design and ship performant, reliable terminal experiences that developers depend on for daily work.
  • Use data, benchmarks, and direct user feedback to guide iteration and investment.
  • Collaborate across org boundaries to enable other teams to build agentic products on top of a shared foundation.

Benefits

  • Employees at Microsoft are often offered comprehensive, “world-class” benefits—including health and mental-wellness programs, competitive pay with bonuses and stock awards, and retirement/savings options. Time-off and flexibility are common, with generous vacation and holidays, parental and caregiver leave, and flexible work schedules, alongside learning support, employee resource groups, product discounts, and matching-gifts/volunteering programs. Specific benefits can vary by region.
