Job description

The Physical Design Engineer role at Google focuses on shaping the future of AI/ML hardware acceleration, specifically through the development of Tensor Processing Unit (TPU) technology. The engineer will work within a team that drives innovation in custom silicon solutions, addressing complex physical implementation issues at advanced process nodes. This position requires collaboration with cross-functional teams, including design, architecture, and power engineers, to optimize design options for performance, power, and area. The role is critical in delivering cutting-edge capabilities that empower Google's AI applications.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience with physical design from RTL to GDSII, including synthesis, floor planning, place and route, and timing closure.
  • Experience with scripting languages in one or more of the following: Perl, Python, or Tcl.
  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering or Computer Science is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Perform physical design of complex blocks from Register-Transfer Level (RTL) to Graphic Data System (GDS).
  • Use problem-solving and debugging skills to collaborate with cross-functional teams to achieve optimal Power/Performance Analysis (PPA).
  • Develop, validate, and improve Electronic Design Automation (EDA) methodology for specialized implementation and sign-off domains.
  • Work with architects and logic designers to drive architectural feasibility studies and explore RTL/design trade-offs for physical design closure.

Benefits

  • Employees at Google are often offered benefits like comprehensive health insurance, 401(k) matching, and flexible work arrangements, among other benefits.
