Job description

The role is for a performance-minded systems engineer on the Ad Server Platform team at Netflix Ads. This team is responsible for building and maintaining the ad serving infrastructure that supports Netflix's advertising ecosystem. The main focus is to ensure the ad serving infrastructure operates efficiently under demanding latency and throughput requirements. The engineer will work on optimizing performance and reliability across various services and frameworks.

Requirements

  • 7+ years of experience building and optimizing distributed systems and backend services at scale.
  • Deep experience with performance engineering, including profiling and systematic bottleneck analysis.
  • Strong understanding of latency engineering concepts and techniques.
  • Experience designing and running load tests for high-throughput, latency-sensitive systems.
  • Proficiency in Java, Kotlin, or similar JVM languages with a deep understanding of runtime behavior.
  • Experience with event-driven architectures and ad serving concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Profile and optimize the ad serving runtime for latency, throughput, and resource efficiency.
  • Identify and eliminate performance bottlenecks across services.
  • Design and run load tests and capacity models to validate system behavior under peak traffic.
  • Establish performance baselines and implement automated benchmarking in CI/CD.
  • Instrument latency telemetry and profiling across the ad request lifecycle.
  • Optimize the rule engine framework and frequency management service.
  • Drive platform reliability through capacity planning and autoscaling tuning.
  • Own performance SLOs and budgets, tracking them and holding teams accountable.
  • Partner with infrastructure teams to adopt runtime improvements and tune GC strategies.

Benefits

  • Employees at Netflix are often offered flexible, people-first benefits—unlimited time away, generous parental leave, global family-forming support, mental-health programs (mindfulness, free counseling/coaching), and health coverage tailored by country. Financially, Netflix pays at personal top-of-market and lets employees choose their mix of cash vs. fully-vested 10-year stock options, alongside donation and volunteer matching. Convenience perks can include trust-based travel/expense policies, relocation support, and “Work, Not Drive” rideshare flexibility.
