Job description

The Senior Gameplay Engineer at Netflix is responsible for managing, designing, and implementing game systems, with a focus on Linux-based environments. This role involves providing technical mentorship to junior engineers and collaborating with senior engineers to define technical specifications. The engineer will work independently or lead a small team to develop key gameplay features and systems. The position emphasizes reliability, accountability, and professionalism in all interactions.

Requirements

  • 8 years of experience in delivering production-level code in a professional environment.
  • Advanced knowledge and experience with Linux operating systems and environments.
  • Proficiency in Linux shell scripting and command-line tools.
  • Experience with Linux-based application development, deployment, and maintenance.
  • Familiarity with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes.
  • Experience shipping multiple successful game products into the marketplace.
  • iOS and Android mobile development experience.
  • Real-time strategy and Unity 3D game development experience.

Responsibilities

  • Work on key gameplay and engine features independently or in a supervisory capacity over a small, cross-disciplinary team.
  • Collaborate with Principal/Director level engineers to define technical specifications for large systems.
  • Support project Lead and fill in for project meetings as needed.
  • Partner with other engineers to develop tools and processes that improve efficiency and quality.
  • Develop and update feature documentation and maintain a shared library of tech and process documentation.
  • Independently design and implement key systems and gameplay features.
  • Mentor, motivate, and inspire other engineers.
  • Help guide or lead cross-disciplinary dialogs to drive features from initial concept to completion.
  • Design, implement, and manage Linux-based systems and infrastructure.
  • Optimize and troubleshoot Linux systems for performance and reliability.
  • Ensure security best practices are followed for Linux systems.
  • Serve as a liaison between Art and Engineering to facilitate art integration.
  • Coordinate with game teams to ensure consistent standards and production methodologies across the studio.
  • Resolve any issues that arise with existing systems when running on Linux.

Benefits

  • Employees at Netflix are often offered flexible, people-first benefits—unlimited time away, generous parental leave, global family-forming support, mental-health programs (mindfulness, free counseling/coaching), and health coverage tailored by country. Financially, Netflix pays at personal top-of-market and lets employees choose their mix of cash vs. fully-vested 10-year stock options, alongside donation and volunteer matching. Convenience perks can include trust-based travel/expense policies, relocation support, and “Work, Not Drive” rideshare flexibility.
