Job description

This role is for a mechanical engineer focused on designing and developing high-performance electric motors for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and ground equipment. The position is part of a small, high-impact team working on a new autonomous delivery system. The engineer will work in a fast-paced, prototype-driven environment in San Francisco, requiring on-site presence at least three days a week. The role offers significant opportunities for architectural ownership and cross-functional collaboration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering and at least 3 years of experience.
  • Experience with dynamic mechanical systems such as motors and actuators.
  • Strong 3D modeling skills for complex parts and assemblies.
  • Self-sufficient in structural and thermal simulation.
  • Hands-on prototyping experience, including metal fabrication and 3D printing.
  • Familiarity with electromechanical integration and wiring practices.
  • Experience designing hardware for outdoor or harsh environments.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturability and assembly methods.
  • Ability to work in an exploratory, fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with electro-mechanical design experts on winding and magnet design.
  • Design mass and volume optimized rotor and stator structures.
  • Select and design bearing systems.
  • Integrate electrical wiring and connectors.
  • Select and integrate motor sensors such as rotary encoders and temperature sensors.
  • Perform structural and thermal finite element analysis to optimize performance and reliability.
  • Take ownership of motors from concept through production.
  • Build prototypes, fixtures, and test hardware using CNC tools and 3D printers.
  • Design for outdoor commercial operation, ensuring ingress protection and environmental survival.
