Job description

The Staff Software Engineer, Stream Compute role at Stripe involves defining and delivering the next generation of Flink-first stream compute infrastructure. The Stream Compute team focuses on building and operating systems that handle sensitive financial data at scale, ensuring high reliability and performance. This position requires collaboration with various teams to drive innovation and improve operational practices. The engineer will tackle complex problems in stream processing, contributing to the overall success of Stripe's infrastructure.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience building, operating, and evolving large-scale production systems.
  • Experience as a technical lead for teams working on distributed systems.
  • Hands-on experience with big data technologies such as Flink, Spark, Kafka, Pulsar, or Pinot.
  • Experience developing, maintaining, and debugging distributed systems built with open-source tools.
  • Strong software engineering skills and a passion for big data distributed systems.
  • Ability to write high-quality code in programming languages like Go, Java, or Scala.
  • Comfortable operating with high autonomy and ownership.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and operate stream compute infrastructure with Apache Flink at the center.
  • Partner with product and platform teams across Stripe to understand requirements and improve stream processing infrastructure.
  • Define and implement operational best practices to improve resilience and reliability at scale.
  • Drive fleet-level automation and standardization through self-service workflows and self-healing systems.
  • Lead initiatives that enhance Flink availability and state durability.
  • Evaluate and productionize Flink ecosystem capabilities to improve developer experience.
  • Work closely with the open-source community to adopt new features and contribute back to OSS.
