Job description
The Machine Learning Engineer role focuses on foundation model evaluation, playing a critical role in assessing the capabilities of models that power Apple Intelligence features. This position involves close collaboration with machine learning researchers to translate evaluation insights into actionable improvements for future model performance. The engineer will ensure that foundation model performance is measured quickly and reliably to support crucial model shipping decisions. The role requires designing, implementing, and maintaining evaluation infrastructure while working on high-impact parts of the Apple product and foundation model lifecycle.
Requirements
- 5+ years of hands-on machine learning engineering experience.
- At least 1+ years of experience working directly on large language models or generative AI.
- Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Strong software engineering fundamentals, including debugging, testing, code reviews, and production reliability/scalability.
- Hands-on experience with LLM training and/or evaluation workflows.
- Experience evaluating large language models at scale or designing large language model benchmarks.
- Strong communication skills to convey important information clearly and concisely.
- Self-motivated and curious with a drive to continually learn on the job.
- High level of creative and critical thinking skills with a tolerance for ambiguity.
Responsibilities
- Assess the capabilities of foundation models powering Apple Intelligence features.
- Collaborate with machine learning researchers to improve model performance.
- Ensure quick and reliable measurement of foundation model performance.
- Design, implement, and maintain evaluation infrastructure.
- Work on model hillclimbing and develop novel methodologies for measuring model performance.
- Contribute to high-impact parts of the Apple product and foundation model lifecycle.
