JobsBattery Materials Characterization Engineer
Job description
In this role within the Battery Engineering group, you will be a subject matter expert in the structural characterization and chemical analysis of lithium-ion battery materials. You will leverage your expertise in Raman spectroscopy and other techniques to develop methods that enhance the understanding of failure mechanisms in batteries. By collaborating with various product development teams, you will contribute to the innovation of new battery technologies. Your work will help push the boundaries of battery performance and improve customer experiences globally.
Requirements
- BS in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.
- Experience with Raman spectroscopy or a relevant technique.
- Experience with at least one characterization technique such as SEM, FTIR, or XRD.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or a related field with 5 years of relevant industry experience.
- Graduate-level coursework or research involving Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy applied to energy storage materials.
- Deep knowledge of Raman spectroscopy for Li-ion battery materials, including interpretation of spectra for common materials.
- Hands-on experience with SEM and FIB-SEM, including sample preparation and imaging.
- Proficiency in FTIR spectroscopy for chemical characterization of battery-relevant materials.
- Experience handling and preparing air-sensitive battery materials.
Responsibilities
- Function as the subject matter expert for structural characterization and chemical analysis of lithium-ion battery materials.
- Develop methods based on project needs to understand failure mechanisms and root causes in lithium-ion batteries.
- Review data from other analysts and coordinate the use of multiple techniques to drive materials understanding.
- Apply Raman and complementary characterization techniques to solve critical problems in battery material development.
- Handle and prepare air-sensitive battery materials in a glovebox environment.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage.
