JobsBattery Materials Characterization Engineer
Job description
This position is part of the Battery Engineering group, focusing on the structural characterization and chemical analysis of lithium-ion battery materials. The role involves developing methods to understand failure mechanisms and coordinating multiple techniques to enhance materials understanding. You will collaborate with product development teams to innovate battery technologies that improve energy density and performance. A strong foundation in Raman spectroscopy and complementary techniques is essential for success in this role.
Requirements
- BS in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field with a minimum of 3 years of relevant industry experience.
- Experience with Raman spectroscopy or relevant techniques.
- Experience with at least one characterization technique such as SEM, FTIR, or XRD.
- M.S. or Ph.D. in chemistry, materials science, chemical engineering, or related field with graduate-level coursework or research involving Raman spectroscopy and electron microscopy applied to energy storage materials.
- Deep knowledge of Raman spectroscopy for Li-ion battery materials, including interpretation of spectra for common materials.
Responsibilities
- Function as the subject matter expert for structural characterization and chemical analysis of lithium-ion battery materials and systems.
- Develop methods based on project needs to build a deep understanding of failure mechanisms and root causes in lithium-ion batteries.
- Review data from other analysts and coordinate the use of multiple techniques to drive materials understanding.
- Apply Raman and complementary characterization techniques to solve critical problems in battery material development.
- Handle and prepare air-sensitive battery materials in glovebox operations.
Benefits
- Employees at Apple are often offered comprehensive benefits that support physical and mental well-being—flexible medical plans, confidential counseling, onsite wellness centers at major campuses, and resources for fitness and daily life. Families typically receive fertility support, paid parental leave with gradual return, caregiving leave, and dependent-care guidance, while financial perks commonly include stock grants (with purchase discounts), 401(k) matching, and income-protection coverage. Employees also see robust time off, Apple University learning and tuition reimbursement, donation matching and paid volunteer hours, and deep product and partner discounts.
