Job description
The Senior Scientist (R2) role at Elanco focuses on advancing innovative therapies for companion and farm animals through expertise in disease biology, physiology, and translational research. This position is part of the Mechanistic Biology team and emphasizes collaboration with cross-functional scientists to design and interpret studies that inform therapeutic strategies. The ideal candidate will integrate clinical insights and experimental biology to enhance understanding of disease mechanisms and therapeutic opportunities. This non-lab-based role seeks a scientifically curious researcher who values collaboration and innovation.
Requirements
- DVM with advanced specialty training in internal medicine and/or PhD in veterinary physiology, comparative medicine, translational biology, biomedical sciences, or a related field.
- Experience studying naturally occurring or experimental disease biology in veterinary or biomedical research settings.
- Demonstrated ability to design, lead, or interpret hypothesis-driven research in a collaborative scientific environment.
- Ability to integrate complex biological, physiological, clinical, and experimental data to inform scientific decisions.
- Experience with biomolecular, translational, or mechanistic research approaches.
Responsibilities
- Lead or contribute to translational research strategies aimed at understanding disease biology and advancing novel therapeutic approaches.
- Identify and prioritize biologically meaningful therapeutic targets using physiological, clinical, mechanistic, and translational evidence.
- Apply mechanistic and translational thinking to evaluate therapeutic opportunities, biological risks, and potential safety considerations.
- Develop and apply biomarker, diagnostic, and translational research approaches that improve understanding of disease progression and therapeutic response.
- Serve as a scientific subject matter expert in physiology, disease mechanisms, and translational interpretation of animal studies.
Benefits
- Employees at Elanco are often offered competitive compensation with annual bonus and equity eligibility, retirement plans (including a U.S. 401(k)), and comprehensive health coverage—medical, dental, vision, company-paid life and disability—and even pet insurance. Time-off and flexibility typically include generous PTO, U.S. mid-year and year-end paid shutdown weeks, parental leave, and flexible/remote work options. Employees also benefit from strong development programs (onboarding, course libraries, mentorship, nine ERGs, and tiered leadership programs) that support both professional growth and community involvement.
