Job description

The Principal Power Systems Engineer will serve as a technical leader within the Power Generation Solutions team, focusing on advanced electrical systems and microgrid implementations. This role involves driving technical decisions that impact AWS' global infrastructure strategy while ensuring that power systems meet performance and operational standards. The engineer will work across multiple organizations to develop innovative solutions for delivering power to AWS data centers. The team is dedicated to advancing AWS' mission through innovative engineering solutions and maintaining high infrastructure uptime.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of experience with power systems and electrical design, with at least 5 years in data centers or high availability applications.
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • In-depth knowledge of continuous operating redundant electrical systems and power infrastructure.
  • Experience with power generation equipment, systems, and controls.
  • Extensive experience in electrical power design, including interpreting wiring diagrams and electrical drawing packages.
  • Experience leading cross-functional technical teams and collaborating with multiple engineering disciplines.
  • Proficiency with electrical design tools and analysis software.
  • Master's degree or Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering or related field is preferred.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • Familiarity with power flow studies and utility interconnection requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Understand current and emerging scalable power and energy technologies to solve challenges in power system design.
  • Lead the team in developing test requirements to ensure solutions meet AWS' high standards for quality and availability.
  • Oversee and plan engineering goals for key initiatives that support future projects and growth.
  • Provide input and direction to Data Center Engineering teams for design revisions for new data centers.
  • Demonstrate ability to review business cases and analysis models to select projects and designs.
  • Create and lead the development of power generation configurations for different applications.
  • Work independently and have frequent reviews with business leadership and other Principal Engineers.
  • Facilitate the escalation of low-level project and product issues to senior engineering and business leadership.
  • Actively grow and coach the engineering team through group forums and one-on-one mentoring.
  • Continuously learn and test new ideas while maintaining a positive work environment.
