Job description

The Lead Tire Engineer at Rivian will play a crucial role in the Vehicle Hardware Engineering – Chassis – Product Development team, focusing on the development of tires for electric adventure vehicles. This position involves leading tire development from concept through production, ensuring that performance attributes are balanced effectively. The engineer will collaborate cross-functionally with various teams to define requirements and deliver robust solutions. The role requires strong leadership and technical skills to mentor less-experienced engineers and present technical recommendations to stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Motorsport Engineering, or a related field is required; a Master's degree is preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant experience in tire design, development, tuning, or systems engineering at an OEM or tire supplier.
  • Excellent statistical and analytical skills to work confidently with test data and performance metrics.
  • Strong leadership aptitude, including mentoring and influencing without direct authority.
  • Experience operating effectively in fast-paced development environments with compressed timing and multiple program demands.
  • Willingness to travel as required for tire builds, testing, and supplier visits.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end engineering development of tires and tire-wheel assemblies from concept to production.
  • Own program-level tire engineering deliverables including requirement definition and engineering sign-off.
  • Balance and translate vehicle-level attribute targets into tire-level technical requirements.
  • Use data-driven engineering judgment to interpret test and supplier data and make confident recommendations.
  • Develop collaborative relationships with tire suppliers and internal stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of solutions.
  • Support tire modeling, simulation, and correlation activities to improve development efficiency.
  • Present technical recommendations and status clearly to leadership and program teams.
  • Mentor less-experienced engineers and demonstrate leadership through technical direction and ownership of outcomes.

Benefits

  • Employees at Rivian are often offered comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, a 401(k) with company match, ESPP and potential RSU grants, performance bonuses, and generous time off including paid parental and sick leave. Perks can include 24/7 mental-health coaching and therapy, Hinge Health for Anthem enrollees, tuition assistance and professional development, plus on-site food and a wide range of employee discounts on items like computers, mobile phones, home loans, and pet care.
