The role is for a data engineer on Apple's Battery Engineering team, focusing on building data systems and an AI interface for battery engineers. The engineer will expand the Battery Data Warehouse, creating reliable data pipelines and establishing trust with source-system owners. Additionally, the engineer will develop BARD, a natural language interface that transforms how engineers interact with data. This position combines data engineering and AI engineering, requiring both technical skills and collaboration.

Requirements

  • BS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field
  • Experience with Python, SQL, and at least one other high-level programming language
  • Experience building production data pipelines (ETL/ELT)
  • MS in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field with 10+ years of relevant industry experience
  • Strong database fundamentals including data modeling, schema design, indexing, normalization, ACID, and OLTP vs. OLAP
  • Hands-on database development experience including DML, DDL, materialized views, and stored procedures
  • Experience with orchestration tools such as Airflow and cloud platforms like AWS
  • Deep curiosity about AI and hands-on experience applying it in work or personal projects
  • Experience with LLM and MCP server development
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills

Responsibilities

  • Expand the Battery Data Warehouse by building reliable data pipelines from disparate systems
  • Earn the trust of source-system owners and establish SLAs for data dependability
  • Develop BARD, the natural language interface to the Battery Data Warehouse
  • Engineer the full agentic stack including custom MCP server and agentic search
  • Collaborate closely with the team while driving projects forward
