Job description

The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be part of the Amazon Leo for Government Engineering team, which focuses on developing solutions for satellite and ground applications. This role involves delivering innovative designs and analyses for optical systems that meet customer needs, particularly for government agencies. The engineer will work collaboratively with various disciplines to ensure that designs are robust and meet mission requirements. A hands-on approach is essential, along with the ability to communicate technical results effectively.

Requirements

  • BS degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 4+ years of working in mechanical engineering or equivalent experience
  • 2+ years of experience as an opto-mechanical engineer
  • Understanding of STOP analysis and its impact on opto-mechanical design
  • Master's degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent is preferred
  • Experience in the design of complex mechanical products and equipment at volume
  • 6+ years of experience in opto-mechanical design and analysis
  • 1+ years of experience with STOP analysis
  • 1+ years as a mechanical lead or responsible engineer for opto-mechanical systems
  • Experience with space-based optical systems

Responsibilities

  • Perform opto-mechanical design and layout trade studies for satellite optical communication payloads and ground-based optical communication equipment.
  • Execute design validation testing in relevant environments to verify performance and capabilities.
  • Conduct or support structural, thermal, and optical analysis via finite element methods to support design work.
  • Facilitate cost trades on multiple configurations for cost versus design uncertainty.
  • Generate detailed designs via CAD systems and engineering drawings with appropriate geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
  • Deliver well-written documentation, reports, and presentations for technical design reviews.
  • Design and support test campaigns for space hardware.
  • Interact directly with customers to understand technical requirements and translate them into robust solutions.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
