Job description

As the Principal Research Scientist for In Vitro Assay Development at Elanco, you will lead the design and implementation of complex experiments to assess drug potency and mechanisms of action. You will serve as the scientific hub for a team focused on ensuring that new drugs are effective before animal testing. This role requires collaboration with various teams and the mentorship of junior scientists. Your work will directly influence the scientific direction of projects within a diverse and innovative environment.

Requirements

  • Ph.D. in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, or a related discipline with 8+ years of relevant industry experience, or an M.S. with 12+ years of extensive, relevant industry experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in developing a wide array of cell-based assays.
  • Proven experience with small molecule drug discovery and expertise in at least one other modality.
  • A track record of identifying critical scientific problems and independently driving the development of solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as the intellectual leader for the design and development of all critical protein and cell-based assays.
  • Architect the end-to-end in vitro screening strategy for diverse projects.
  • Define and manage the strategic balance of assay development and execution between internal teams and external Contract Research Organizations.
  • Drive scientific innovation by evaluating and implementing cutting-edge technologies and new methodologies.
  • Lead, mentor, and guide a team of 3-5 scientists.
  • Act as a key scientific liaison, collaborating closely with leaders in medicinal chemistry, protein engineering, immunology, and virology.

Benefits

  • Employees at Elanco are often offered competitive compensation with annual bonus and equity eligibility, retirement plans (including a U.S. 401(k)), and comprehensive health coverage—medical, dental, vision, company-paid life and disability—and even pet insurance. Time-off and flexibility typically include generous PTO, U.S. mid-year and year-end paid shutdown weeks, parental leave, and flexible/remote work options. Employees also benefit from strong development programs (onboarding, course libraries, mentorship, nine ERGs, and tiered leadership programs) that support both professional growth and community involvement.
