The Automation Controls Engineer at Rivian is responsible for overseeing production line controls at the Normal, IL facility. This role focuses on heavy PLC programming and troubleshooting technical issues during production. The engineer will work closely with various teams to implement changes and improvements to enhance production efficiency. The position requires a strong background in controls engineering and a passion for innovative solutions in manufacturing.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of Controls Engineering experience or equivalent work experience.
- BS/MS in Electrical Engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Expertise with common controls hardware components used in high-volume manufacturing.
- Hands-on experience integrating and commissioning high volume manufacturing equipment.
- In-depth knowledge of Safety standards (ANSI/RIA15.06, OSHA).
- Experience developing electrical schematics using EPLAN, AutoCAD Electrical, or similar.
- Advanced proficiency programming industrial equipment using various IEC 61131-3 languages.
- Experience writing standard and safety PLC projects from scratch for high-volume manufacturing equipment using Rockwell, Siemens, or Beckhoff PLCs.
- Experience creating HMI projects from scratch for high-volume manufacturing equipment using FactoryTalk View, WinCC, Ignition, Wonderware, TwinCAT HMI, or similar.
- Experience troubleshooting common fieldbus networks such as Ethernet/IP, EtherCAT, or Profinet.
Responsibilities
- Participate in various controls equipment buy-offs at vendor sites and at Rivian’s factory for FAT, SAT, and safety.
- Develop controls standards and specifications by providing feedback from each project.
- Continuously improve production lines by reducing cycle time and downtime while improving quality.
- Maintain, modify, and version control equipment programs and documentation.
- Troubleshoot and improve PLCs using Ladder Logic and/or Structured Text.
- Enhance HMIs to make them more user-friendly and suitable for equipment operation.
- Implement modifications to MES logic for production and performance management.
- Ensure proper implementation of control reliable safety systems for manufacturing equipment.
- Train Production and Maintenance teams in the proper use of equipment and troubleshooting.
