Job description

The Optical Engineer will be a key member of the Amazon Leo for Government Engineering team, focusing on the design and analysis of optical systems for space and ground applications. This role requires a hands-on approach and collaboration with cross-functional engineers to meet customer needs, particularly for government agencies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in optical system design and experience in making optimization trades for payloads. The position emphasizes innovative solutions and the ability to lead small subsystem efforts.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of experience in optical system design and build.
  • Experience with lasers, detectors, modulators, optical fiber and devices, testing and characterization.
  • Experience with optical metrology for component and system test and qualification.
  • Experience with physical and geometric optics, Gaussian beam propagation and detection.
  • Experience building custom optical systems and test setups.
  • Master's or PhD Degree in Optical Engineering, Physics, Electronics, or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • Expertise in imaging and non-imaging optical design using Zemax or equivalent software.
  • Experience in stray light analysis using FRED or other software.
  • Experience in how opto-mechanical design affects optical design and performance.
  • Experience in automated testing and system characterization.
  • Ability to regularly engage with stakeholders and influence system development.
  • Knowledge of optical and laser industries and component suppliers.

Responsibilities

  • Design optical systems for ground and space applications while influencing opto-mechanical design.
  • Lead the development of optical setups for assembly, integration, and testing of optical systems.
  • Support continuous design improvement of payload optical subsystems and test setups.
  • Build and characterize prototypes of optical subsystems and components.
  • Assist in transitioning design and assembly processes to AI&T and manufacturing.
  • Facilitate training for optical and opto-mechanical technicians and support engineers.

Benefits

  • Employees at Amazon are often offered comprehensive health benefits—including multiple medical plan options (no pre-existing condition exclusions, 100% covered in-network preventive care), dental and vision plans, a 24/7 medical advice line from day one, expert second-opinion services, and broad mental-health support with several free counseling sessions (including pediatric). Financial wellness typically includes a 401(k) with company match (up to 2%), Restricted Stock Units (equity), FSAs, an emergency savings program, product and partner discounts, and even college-savings and home-purchase programs. Overall, the package is designed to support employees and their families’ health, finances, and day-to-day life.
